CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study In conducting the research on the topic mentioned, this chapter brings forth the introduction background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, study objectives, research questions, the scope of the study in terms of geography, content/variables and time, the significance of the study, conceptual framework and eventually operational definitions of key terms. The impact of early pregnancy presents a situation of child bearing that is either unwanted or mistimed at the time of conception. The impact of early pregnancy always occurs without the wish of woman, or after a woman has reached her desired family size and does not want any more children. The impact of early pregnancy affects the academic performance of students in schools as many students can’t sustain themselves in schools. Wikipedia (2013) defines Academic performance as the outcome of education the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Academic achievement is commonly measured by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts. The tracking of academic performance fulfills a number of purposes. Areas of achievement and failure in a student’s academic career need to be evaluated in order to foster improvement and make full use of the learning process.
